Doses.

For Adults:
The daily dose for adult may not exceed 0.5 mg/kg/day. The starting dosage for adult patients is 4 mg (1 tablet) 3 times a day. The dose should be given according to the response of the patient.

Children Aged between 7 to 14 years:

The normal starting dose is 4 mg (1 tablet) two to three times a day. The dosage has to be adjusted as necessary to the response of the patient. The max dose for children whose age is 7 to 14 years is 16 mg a day.

 

To increase the appetite, adults are prescribed 1/2 tablet, 1 tablet 3-4 times a day or 1-2 teaspoons of syrup 3-4 times a day; children from 2 to 6 years old – no more than 2 tablets or 4 teaspoons of syrup per day; children from 6 to 14 years old – no more than 3 tablets or 6 teaspoons of syrup per day.

 

The recommended dose is 2 mg oral in every 6 hours.

Warnings and Precautions to use Cyproheptadine HCl Tablets

Overdosage of antihistamines including Cyproheptadine HCl tablets, particularly in infants and young children, can produce central nervous system depression, hallucinations, respiratory, convulsions, and cardiac arrest, and death.

Antihistamines can cause mental alertness in young children, they may produce excitation occasionally.

Patients may be warned about doing activities that require a high level of mental alertness and motor coordination, such as driving a car or operating machinery.


Antihistamines are more likely to cause sedation, dizziness, and hypotension in elderly patients.

Cyproheptadine HCl has an atropine like action and, hence this medicine may be used with caution in patients with History of bronchial asthma, Hyperthyroidism, Increased intraocular pressure, Cardiovascular disease and Hypertension

Caution should be exercised in patients with history of asthma, ulcer, difficulty in urinating, increased eye pressure, high blood pressure, heart disease, seizures, overactive thyroid, any allergy, who are taking other medications, during pregnancy and breast feeding.

Avoid alcohol consumption.

Avoid exposure to sunlight; otherwise it may cause sunburn.

 

Ciplactin possible Side Effects

 

It may include an allergic reaction:

• hives;

• swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

• difficulty breathing;

 

Also, the most possible side effects include:

• hallucinations, confusion, unusual thoughts or behaviour;

• convulsions

• blinking in your ears;

• feeling to be dead;

• fast heartbeats;

• bleeding; less urinating than usual or not at all;

• yellowed skin, dark coloured urine, fever, or unusual weakness.

Less serious include:

• drowsiness, dizziness, or spinning sensation;

• restlessness or excitability (in children);

• insomnia, tired feeling or tingly feeling;

• increase in sweating or urination;

• blurred vision;

• appetite change;

• dry mouth or nose, upset stomach;

• or nausea, diarrhoea, constipation.

The Ciplactin tablets also affects the following:

 

Central Nervous System : sleepiness, drowsiness, disturbed coordination, confusion, restlessness, excitation, nervousness, tremor, irritability, insomnia, tingling, convulsions, emotional state, hallucination and faintness.

Skin : Rash, excessive sweating, hives and photosensitivity.

Eye and ENT : Blurred vision, dual vision, fainting and blinking in the ear.

Cyproheptadine HCl During Pregnancy Tablets

Cyproheptadine HCl is classified by the US FDA as Pregnancy Category B. Reproduction researches performed in animals with oral doses up to 32 times than human oral dose and have revealed no evidence of impaired fertility or harm to the foetus due to Cyproheptadine HCl.

Two studies conducted in pregnant women, however, have not proved that Cyproheptadine HCl increases the risk of abnormal activities when administered during the first, second and third trimesters of pregnancy. No teratogenic effects has been observed in any of the newborns. Nevertheless, because the studies conducted in humans cannot rule out the possibility of any harm, Cyproheptadine HCl should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed.

Cyproheptadine HCl During Nursing

It is unknown whether Cyproheptadine HCl is excreted in human milk. Since many medicines are excreted in human milk, and because of the potential for serious abnormal reactions in lactating infants from Cyproheptadine HCl, a decision should be made whether to stop breast feeding or to stop using Ciplactin Tablets, taking into account the importance of the medicine to the mother.

 

Drug interaction

Ciplactin interacts with such medication as Marplan; Nardil; Azilect; Eldepryl, Emsam; or Parnate. Also, note that the interaction between two medications does not always mean that you must stop taking one of them. As usual, it affects the effect of drugs, so consult with your doctor about how their interactions are being managed.
